1.1.5 Hybrid and Bivalent Systems

A hybrid system combines a heat pump with a gas boiler. This latter has two functions: it is an

alternative heat source when the ambient temperature becomes too low for the heat pump and it

may provide instantaneous domestic hot water. Figure 5 shows two hybrid systems: one having a

domestic hot water tank and another providing instantaneous domestic hot water. The indoor unit

contains the gas boiler.

A bivalent system consists of a Daikin Altherma system combined with a boiler or an electrical

heater. Below a given ambient temperature, usually the equilibrium temperature (see Figure 9),

the heat pump stops. The second system then takes over to produce the required heating capacity.

1.1.6 Ground Source (GS) System

Figure 6 shows a ground source system. The indoor unit extracts heat from the ground and uses it

for space heating and for domestic hot water in its integrated water tank.
